Study of Drug Loading and Evaluation of Bioactivity of Calcium Phosphate and Titanium Dioxide Nanotube Composite

Abstract
One of the main solutions for eliminating various bone and cartilage defects is the use of various biomaterials such as implants and scaffolds. A layer of hydroxyapatite, which is one of the main components of bone, is created, which creates a bond between this biomaterial and the body's natural bone. Other applications of bioactive glasses include its use as a drug carrier. By loading antibiotics onto the glass used in damaged tissue and controlled release, possible infections in the graft area can be prevented. In this study, a bioactive nanocomposite consisting of bioactive glass and titanium dioxide nanotubes with nanoparticle concentrations of 5 and 15% was synthesized by the sol-gel method. Next, the bioactive properties, morphology, particle size, crystal structure and drug loading rate on the nanocomposites were investigated. In vitro bioactivity test was performed by immersing the samples in simulated body fluid for 28 days and considering the formation of hydroxyapatite layer on the surface of the samples. The results of the in vitro bioactivity test indicated the bioactivity of all synthesized samples. Among the available samples, the nanoglass containing 5% titanium dioxide nanotubes was the best. This nanoglass also showed the best performance in the drug loading test.
